After twelve-year-old Will Parry accidentally kills a man, he discovers an invisible window that leads to Cittàgazze, a city in another world, in his efforts to escape the police. The city looks recently deserted, and Will chooses a shop to find food. It is here that he meets 12-year-old Lyra Silvertongue and her daemon Pantalaimon, who came here after entering the hole in the sky that her father, Lord Asriel, created at the end of Northern Lights.
