Illustrations by Sandra Dieckmann.

I have chosen these images as research of what people have already illustrated that could be perceived as a parallel universe because it is out of the norm in ours.

Parallel universe

http://www.stumbleupon.com/su/44N7jh/science.howstuffworks.com/innovation/science-questions/quantum-suicide.htm/

After twelve-year-old Will Parry accidentally kills a man, he discovers an invisible window that leads to CittĂ gazze, a city in another world, in his efforts to escape the police. The city looks recently deserted, and Will chooses a shop to find food. It is here that he meets 12-year-old Lyra Silvertongue and her daemon Pantalaimon, who came here after entering the hole in the sky that her father, Lord Asriel, created at the end of Northern Lights.
Goes between different parallel worlds with a knife.
IDEA: Have a mixture of ‘characters’ in one universe from all the different universes that I will illustrate.
In this observational image I drew it almost looks like the cat is either dreaming about cats or has left it’s body and is transparent. Almost as if it is chaining between two parallel universes.

Need to start

doing observational drawings that are relevant not just random scenery and objects around me. Needs to have more focused observational drawings.

Parallel universe Elvis still alive.
IDEA: universe where people age backwards - : see benjamin button film.

Examples of observational drawings that I have drawn that I need to experiment with ...

Trying out different colours for humans

Picasso - Three Musicians

I have included this picture because it shows a different look of the human image. This will be useful when I draw humans in different parallel universes.

Ronald Searle

The image above shows pigs flying which could also be in a Parallel universe. I am interested in his style and the line he uses. IT is also relevant to my work because it shows the fantasy element of my project.

I would like to use watercolour mainly in this project however this is my usually way of working therefore I got to try out different techniques too.

Skills required:

1. Draw observational drawings in various media:
 -Quick observations
 - Continuous line to get interesting images
- Lengthy observations
2. Experiments in various artists styles and emotions.
More examples of how humour can come across in the illustrations for parallel universe.

Artist online example of a parallel universe.

I hope to achieve a various images. Some may have whole landscapes while others are simple illustrations like the example shown above.

Example

of a parallel universes:

1. Elvis is still alive
2. Elvis was never born

Artists that show what I want to do.

Quentin Blake’s lines are also disconnected like parallel universes which is helpful for what I want to achieve. You can see what the object is even though all the lines are not connected.

Own images that I have produced from Steadman's style

I need to produce images which are similar to these that are produced from observational drawings not photo reference.

Influence

An artist I am going to look at is Ralph Steadman because I like his style and it almost seems disconnected from the world we live in with his messy approach. This is useful for when I draw different parallel universes because it seems like it is disorganised and won’t stay the same for very long.

Idea: changing animation - because in the explanation for parallel universes it suggest that the atoms in this world are also in different parallel worlds so you cannot pin point the centre because it is forever moving in-between universes.

Explanation of Parallel universes

To communicate the world I see, or want to see.

I want to have an 8 bit version of my drawings. So I need to look at varied examples of this.

Project ...

Parallel universe of my observational drawings e.g. If I draw ducks in the parallel universe they would have human feet instead of webbed feet. This will communicate humour, curiosity (being general theories of parallel universe) and fear for some (they may get scared of the imagery produced and other possible parallels).

Experiment ideas:

1. Draw my observational drawings in styles from different cultures.
2. Draw my observational drawings in video game style e.g. 8 bit using digital art.

I typed into google “What is the purpose of a sketchbook” and I found this from: http://v4.jasonsantamaria.com/articles/pretty-sketchy/
It will help me in creating a more experimental sketchbook
Stephane Lauzon sketchbook

The looseness of the lines makes the drawings more interesting and how she has carefully placed detail only in parts that need it to make the whole image recognisable.
Reclining Figure, Juliet Gomperts, Lahore 1989
The different darkness of the lines in this image interests me and I could even use it in my experiments.

Since my work in the past has been quite surreal when I have been drawing the surreal image I posted earlier in the blog still are relevant to my project as I can work of them with experiments.
I may look at textures as well which I can layer into my work.
My first task I will do is to look at other artists observational drawings to have a varied look on how people draw.

For the next few weeks I will:

+ Look for inspiration to do experiments from my observational drawings
+ Find artists who have done what I want to do but non illustrators
+ Try and do 1 or more observational drawings a day

I tried the idea of illustrating conversation but I wasn't inspired by it.
What I really want to do is improve my drawing. Therefore:
WHAT? - I want to improve my drawing.
WHY? - So I can produce work which is good enough to sell. This work will be based off observational drawing through experimentation and adaptation.
HOW? - Drawing from observation, experimenting with different materials to draw with and colour with. Push myself to draw images that I struggle with.
WHO? - This is where I struggle. I don’t have an audience I am doing this to improve my own skills. My audience eventually will be people who want to buy my work. However I can not say I target market at this time because they outcomes from my experiments from observational drawings may vary so they will be suited for different people.

THE QUESTIONS

Opening statement

My personal practice involves fine liner and watercolour. I usually draw straight on to paper with no pencil outline. This makes my drawings inaccurate but to me it makes them more interesting. I usually draw portraits in various colours and different thickness of lines. I would say the images I produce at the moment are surreal images but they have no real point to them they are usually decorative. Sometimes I draw just for humour or I would like to see how an idea looks on paper that I find interesting. I have no clear reason for my drawing and I never think of an audience, these are a few things I need to think about when drawing. I usually just dive in and draw but now I will think about what I’m going to draw and plan it out to have best possible outcome so my drawings don’t start to look the same and predictable.
My ambitions are to improve my drawing skills dramatically and at least master one media. I would like to draw images that entertain people and improve my practice. I would also enjoy experimenting with different drawing materials and using pencil more often to make my drawings more accurate and less rushed. Recently I have drawn with pencil and used watercolour and had no solid dark fine liner pens, I am still unsure whether I like this style however it is encouraging me to draw things that I have trouble with and will hopefully expand my skills.
My motivation is to produce images that are higher quality so I can sell/publish my work and get a job as an art teacher I plan to do this by doing more observational drawing as I discovered improves my art work greatly if I have a goal at the end it will encourage me to do it more so I will be closer to improving my art work to a standard where I think it is good enough to sell.
The illustrators in the past that I have been inspired by and have taken parts of their style from are Ralph Steadman and Gerald Scarfe. They are both sadistic cartoonist and have drawn political cartoons and have both had their work publish in private eye. Their styles are similar that they have very free controlled lines yet I think Scarfe’s marks are ‘cleaner’ than Steadman’s. Their drawings sometimes may be on the dark grotesque side. I have also looked at Ronald Searle in the past however all of these artist have similar yet varied styles I should increase my knowledge and looks at other artists not necessarily illustrators and see if I can be inspired by their work. I am looking for something different so I can try and make my work as unique as possible.
Using less flattering photos for the image I want to create.

Helping me experiment with surreal imagery.

Cab Calloway St. James Infirmary by Fleischer  Surreal cartoon - examples that can influence my work when I need inspiration.

The surreal imagery in this clip is another source where I can get influence from.
I am a head on top of another person’s head
Experimental idea.

From this image I like the idea of using collage and how the images connect but not smoothly. For me it makes the image feel less connected with reality which is what I want to do.

As well as trying to communicate conversation I would also like to have another side project of doing a drawing a day in different media to extend my knowledge of materials and objects/people/surroundings etc. These illustrations will be decorative illustrations only with no meaning behind them. I was inspired by the book ‘One Drawing a day’ Veronica Lawlor.

Very quick sketches of ideas on Illustrator while they are fresh in my mind. Would like to expand on the images.

I want to collect quotes from conversation which have unusual imagery.
This quote reminds me of totem poles.

Examples ...

… That will help me illustrate my goal.

Since I am looking for quite absurd imagery it will probably be best to look at surreal images to help me communicate this imagery better.

The Witnesses, Oil on Canvas,Samy Charnine
The Sea Inside, Oil on Canvas, Samy Charnine

“Charnine has been impacted by the Masters as well as by the surrealists but his style is pure Charnine. He combines whimsical images with precision in his execution. The result is poetic and seasoned.”

I enjoy the concepts of both of these paintings. They are inspirational and I want to do a simpler illustration of them just to see what it looks like. I want imagery like this to appear in my future illustrations.

What am I trying to communicate?

I am trying to show people the ‘Wonders of Conversation’ and I hope to make a book in the future based on this.
The book will show imagery that I have illustrated from every day conversations that have gone off track and I have been able to create surreal illustrations based from where the conversation lead e.g. A phrase that came out of my last conversation was: ‘A River Of Fat People’ so from this I drew this:
